“Ralph, you said that open-source languages like Python and R can be used for data visualization and descriptive analytics. We’re using Tableau now for our supply chain data. What would be a sign that we should switch to open-source?”

I was asked this during a conference recently.

I firmly believe in the power of using open-source languages in supply chain management: that’s core to our offerings at Data Driven Supply Chain LLC.

But it’s not easy for companies to get started with open-source, especially if they’ve been using commercial software like Tableau and PowerBI for visualization and first-level analytics on their supply chain data.

To help companies get started, we’re offering a one-day, hands-on, in-person course on using R for visualizing and analyzing supply chain data. August 29 in downtown Minneapolis.

Partnering with Jeff Clement, Ph.D., the course will cover:

– Types of supply chain data
– Types of charts and graphs and when to use them
– Best practices in data visualization
– Data storytelling fundamentals
– Maps and animations: when and how to use them
– Pitfalls and watch-outs with supply chain data
– Overview of advanced topics: Shiny and Markdown

The target audience for this course are data analysts and business analysts who are now, or moving into, a role supporting supply chain. However, anyone whose roles touch data viz in supply chain – product managers, data scientists, team leaders, and more – will find value in this course.

No prior experience with R is expected or required. We won’t go deep into data analysis in R, but you’ll learn enough to get started with data viz in R. This course is ideal for those who are hesitant about “coding” but want to learn how to better interpret, visualize, and analyze their supply chain data.

To ensure personal attention, we’re limiting this to 20 attendees and we’re filling up fast. If you or your company has been thinking about using R for supply chain data, this is your chance to learn up-close!

The training will be held at Open Book, a beautiful literary arts collective in downtown Minneapolis with free on-site parking and nearby paid parking. It’s also just a few blocks from the US Bank Stadium light rail station, with easy access to downtown Minneapolis, downtown Saint Paul, and the airport / Mall of America areas. Since everyone’s busy, we’re timing the training so you can fly in Monday evening, go to the training all day, then fly back out Tuesday evening.
